The Villa Cardeto

600 years of history

Villa Cardeto

The History

The origins of Villa Cardeto date back to the 15th century. At that time, a small hermitage stood on the hill above the Sovara Valley, where several lay brothers lived. Thanks to its exceptional location with wide views over the valley, it later developed into an outpost of the nearby Castello di Sorci. The foundations of today’s tower date back to this period. Over the centuries, the buildings were continuously expanded, and in the 18th century the complex housed a sheep wool combing workshop, which gave the estate its present name. At that time, wool was combed using rotating wooden rollers fitted with thistles (“cardo” in Italian). Since then, the house has been known as “Villa Cardeto”. The villa acquired its present form through extensive renovation works carried out between 1975 and 1985 by the industrialist Prof. Bruno Mangoni from Anghiari.
